ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) Crews spend a couple of hours early Sunday morning battling a fire in Rock Island. They were dealing with big flames and thick smoke. One fire fighter was hurt during the response.

The call came at about 5 a.m. for reported flames at 500 7th Street. The building is the former Faye's Grocery store. A firefighter was injured in the initial stages of the fight and sent to the hospital for evaluation. There's no word on that person's condition. Part of the building collapsed and there was a lot of damage but no one was inside at the time.

"The building is currently vacant. We had heard some talks that it was going to reopen again as a neighborhood grocery store, but it was in the very early stages at that point," said Greg Marty the Rock Island Fire Marshal.

A cause of the fire hasn't been determined. Officials will interview witnesses and neighbors as part of the investigation.
