SHERRARD, Ill. (KWQC)— Sherrard high school honored local Veterans at their veterans day assembly.
Students of the National Honor Society held the ceremony, naming veterans from each branch of service.
President of FFA Sherrard Chapter President Ann Weber said FFA took part in the assembly by holding each branch of service flags and guiding veterans around the school for the reception and ceremony.
“We just wanted to find a way to honor our veterans and have our organization be involved to help so that not only one organization has to do everything. We just wanted to represent in our own kind of way and be in official dress representing our veterans is an awesome idea,” said Weber.
The assembly featured keynote speaker Maj.Gen. Michael Zerbonia, Assistant Adjutant General for the Illinois National Guard. Maj.Gen Zerbonia said students are the future and speaking to them was an honor.
“It's an honor to speak about veterans and those soldiers who have come before and to remember and honor their families,” said Maj. Gen. Zerbonia.
This is the first year of the National Honor Society has hosted the event at Sherrard and they hope to make it an annual tradition.
