President Obama's latest plan may not sit so well with the kids. He's pushing for schools to add extra time to classes and stay open later during the week. The president is also looking at cutting back on summer vacation.
It's a proposal designed to combat low test scores and improve student's math and science skills. TV-6 asked local parents how they feel about the plan and early reaction seems to be mixed.
"I'd have to say Mr. President, what about family time? What about being with your kids," Thomas Hammill said.
Hammill is a dad of two kids in the Davenport School District. He's also a cook and works weekends. As is, he feels he doesn't have enough time with his kids and does not want them in school longer.
"You have to do homework with them anyway. So you're going to be working with them for an hour. I feel it's better to do that at home than in school."
Hammill says after-school time is also education, but with mom and dad, and he's not the only one who doesn't want the school day lengthened.
"For a parent who works full-time, we struggle already. We maybe get two hours a night together. By the time we're done with showers and homework the night's already over with," Kerri Baumer, a mother of one said.
While many people are passionate against the president's plan, there are parents in favor of it. Cara Guinn likes the president's proposal to shorten summer vacation and her reasoning is two-fold. One reason keeps the kids in mind.
"I think they don't think don't lose as much. They retain more and keep it because they are not out of school for three weeks," Guinn said.
The other reason keeps the parents in mind.
"A lot of people don't have that traditional schedule where you have summers off yourself and that's a lot of hours that the children are not with their parents or are being tended to by others," Guinn continued.
There is one thing all the parents agreed on: the president's plan will not be so popular with their kids.
