Pooches in the Outfield

Updated:

It was a dog day afternoon Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park.

Dozens of pooches roamed the outfield doing tricks before a captivated crowd while competing in tracking, obedience and protection.

It's all part of the 33rd Annual German Shepherd National Championships. The event brought dogs and their owners to the Quad Cities from as far away as California and Maine to compete for bragging rights and a spot in the world championships.

"Good area, centrally located, lot of good people," says organizer Al Govednik. "It had a lot to offer and a lot of people put their support behind us."

This is the first year the championships have been held here in the Quad Cities. Competition will resume Sunday morning at 7 and go til noon.
