SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Republican candidate Bob Schillerstrom says he'd be willing to give up a second term as Illinois governor if that's what it takes to fix the state's many problems.
During a Republican debate Monday night, Schillerstrom promised to cut costs so that revenues and expenses match up. The DuPage County Board chairman says he would be willing to say "no" even if that meant he could not win a second term.
Slashing expenses was a common theme as 6 of the seven Republican candidates debated.
State Sen. Bill Brady complained that some of his opponents were waffling because they don't flatly rule out raising taxes under all circumstances.
Most candidates offer few details about where spending cuts. The most common promise is to improve Medicaid efficiency and overhaul government pensions.
