When it comes to big games like the Super Bowl sports fans may be tempted to make things interesting and put a little money on the line. Right now, sports betting is illegal in most states, but in Iowa that may be coming to an end.
An Iowa Senate subcommittee unanimously approved a bill legalizing sports betting in Iowa. However, there is still a long way to go before such gambling is legal. The bill is among several gambling proposals Iowa lawmakers are considering as they try to close an estimated $400 million budget shortfall.
The measure would allow betting on professional sports at the state's 17 casinos. Some say as long as it's regulated it may be a good idea.
"It's not my cup of tea personally, but I know a lot of people who are interested and who like to make a few wagers now and then. If you can regulate it and keep it clean I don't see any problem with it," said Darryl Patton, server at Rookies Sports Bar in Davenport.
Congress set a ban on sports betting back in 1992. At the time only four states allowed it: Delaware, Nevada, Oregon and Montana. Those states were allowed to continue, but other can't join unless Congress repeals that ban.
