CHICAGO (AP) - No more breakfast in bed for Cook County Jail inmates.
That's the word from Sheriff Tom Dart, who says that he will soon start requiring inmates who want breakfast to come and get it at the dining hall rather than wait for it to be delivered to them in their cells.
Dart spokesman Steve Patterson says the sheriff has noticed thousands of meals delivered to cells go untouched and the food thrown away. By requiring inmates to go to the dining hall, Dart thinks many will just stay in their cells. That will mean the jail will ultimately have to purchase about $1 million a year less in food.
Dart also hopes to save about $750,000 a year by having inmates do their own laundry.
