"The history of Credit Island is that there's been some vandalism and questionable activity down here. We were a little afraid at first."
But owners Jennifer and Kevin Kernan with Princeton Outdoor Adventures teamed up with Healthy Habits Bicycle Shop in hopes that a new venture will restore a family friendly environment on Credit Island. The two businesses now offer biking, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boating for just $7 dollars an hour.
And because many residents in Davenport traveled to Princeton, Iowa for an outdoor adventure, Kernan hopes that a change in location will mean even more business.
"Now that it's in Davenport, it's such a great location. I think there's really a huge opportunity to come here and enjoy a good sport here," said Jennifer Kernan.
Especially for Palmer students and other college kids who come down to the island about twice a week to go fishing.
"I think it's a great idea... more opportunities for people to be outdoors and play in the sun, yeah," said student Tyler Copenhaver.
"It gives college students like us something to do and just to get out," said Palmer student John Coughlin.
After being damaged by floods, the city closed Credit Island Golf Course. Kernan says the threat of flooding is not a concern.
"We're kind of used to that and pretty much with our equipment, we float," said Kernan.
Kernan says with more police patrols and increased family activities, such as ball games, she hopes they will help make Credit Island's past, "history".
"It feels like a safe place to be, with the changes the city has already made, that they're planning to make. This is going to be a great park to come to and enjoy with your family," Kernan said.
There are also plans to bring cross-country skiing during the winter. The two businesses are open during weekends.
