BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois judge has found a 21-year-old man guilty, but mentally ill in the death of his father.
McLean County Circuit Judge Robert Freitag returned the verdict against Liam McCauley on Tuesday in a Bloomington courtroom.
The verdict means McCauley faces 20 to 60 years in prison in the death of his father, Joseph McCauley.
The elder McCauley was a 57-year-old arts and humanities professor at Heartland Community College in Normal. He taught there 18 years.
Joseph McCauley was beaten and stabbed to death at the family's home last August.
Liam McCauley, who chose a bench trial just as jury selection was getting under way last week, is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 20.
