As another holiday approaches, a Muscatine jeweler is doing his part to help those in need. Stevens Diamond Gallery is offering 100 free Valentine necklaces to anyone who cannot afford it.
We found people taking advantage of the offer Monday morning. Mark Emery was laid off in August from Hon. He says he couldn't believe it when he heard about the free gift, "I'm unemployed, and I have a girlfriend in Washington, can't do a whole lot right now cause of the economy."
Store owner, Steve Brown says times have been tough for his business, too. "It's a struggle for me also," Brown said, "Christmas wasn't what it normally is. I've got to be conservative too, but I want to make a difference."
Brown is a member of the Independent Jeweler's Organization, and says a vendor provided the necklaces at a discount. To get one, all you need is proof that you have fallen on hard times, like losing your job or the bank foreclosed on your house. The offer is made on a first come, first served basis.
