Cyprus Connection: Manafort-Linked Accounts on Island Raised Red Flag

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign manager, operated a complex and opaque network of businesses on Cyprus, an island long known as a hub for moving money in and out of Russia, an NBC News investigation has found. According to banking sources with direct knowledge of the transactions, Manafort was associated with at least 15 bank accounts and 10 companies on the island. At least one of those companies was used to receive millions of dollars from a billionaire Russian oligarch who is a Putin ally, according to court documents. In 2012, an anti-money-laundering audit flagged some accounts and the bank asked for more information. Manafort subsequently closed the accounts and the information was not provided, according to banking sources. Manafort has repeatedly denied he ever worked for the Russian government. He has also agreed to appear before the House Intelligence Committee, which is running an inquiry into whether there were ties between Russia and Trump.
