Teacher Charged with Sexual Assault

Updated:

A long -time teacher and coach is arrested and charged with criminal sexual assault.

Investigators say United Township teacher Jason Vanhoutte had sex with a minor, who was also one of his students.  He now faces three counts of felony criminal sexual assault.

Vanhoutte is a social studies teacher, starting his 16th year at UT. At one time, he coached baseball and basketball. And up until now, he was the head football coach at Orion High School.

Police say Friday, a complaint came in to East Moline that there had potentially been inappropriate text messaging between Vanhoutte and a female UT student.

Officers launched an investigation and determined there were multiple texts. And they say, sexual activity did happen at Vanhoutte's Moline home at least three times.

They say that is aggravated by the fact that there was a student-teacher relationship between the 37-year old Vanhoutte and the girl, who police say is between 13 and 18.

Administrators say Vanhoutte was well respected by colleagues and well liked by students. They're having a tough time understanding this. And they say, they're doing what they can for the student involved.

The district superintendent says there will be a board meeting first thing Thursday to determine if Vanhoutte will stay on paid leave or be terminated.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison for each of the three counts.
