Honor Flights have taken hundreds of Quad City World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to view the memorials that honor their service and TV-6 has provided numerous reports on the experience. Before the very first flight left the ground, KWQC-TV6 news anchor Gary Metivier interviewed a man who was planning to go, yet never had shared his war story. The man's name was Andy Tolliver. Mr. Tolliver was so moved by the Honor Flight, he decided to share his story with his family and with Metivier. It's not a happy story, but one that needed to be told.
Mr. Tolliver also inspired Metivier to write a children's book called "Saluting Grandpa". It's meant to help open dialogue between generations, so that the service and sacrifice of these veterans is never forgotten.
Proceeds from the sale of the books goes toward sending other vets on future Honor Flights. Click here to learn more about "Saluting Grandpa".
