At least two people are dead in Rock Falls, Illinois. One of them is also the suspect in a shooting.

Officers say a woman was shot outside of Dillon Elementary School and not far from Rock Falls Middle School. It happened around 8:20 a.m., a time when parents, teachers and students were going in and out of the buildings.

"I heard a gun shot and me and my friend thought it was a firecracker and then she saw the body on the ground," said Maelynna Sharp.

MaeLynna is just one of several kids that neighbors say heard or saw the violent crime. They're shaken up, saying they never thought something like this could happen here.

After the shooting, Dillon Elementary, Rock Falls Middle, and Rock Falls High were all put on lockdown for several hours. Officers were stationed at the schools until the suspect was found.

Police say the gunman ran and they chased him to Coloma Homes, just a couple blocks away in the 500 block of West 18th Street. Officers surrounded the apartment and when they went inside, they found a woman and a man dead. That man, they say, was the suspect in the earlier shooting.

Peggy Denning has lived in Coloma Homes for more than three years. She knows the woman who lives in this apartment and doesn't know where she is now.

"Yeah, it's sad. It's not something you can forget. I mean, I see her walk to school, you know. I've said 'hi' to her, so it's sad," Denning said.

Police are not releasing anything on the condition of the woman who was shot near the school other than to say she was taken to the hospital. They also have not released any names of those involved.
