The results are in and the winner of the Illinois Straw Poll is Ron Paul. The Texas representative got 52 percent of the vote in the first-ever Illinois event.
The poll was created as a fundraiser for the state Republican Party. Anyone from Illinois could vote by making a $5 donation to cast their ballot, either online or in person at a county Republican party office.
The Chicago Tribune reports Herman Cain came in second place, followed by Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachmann, who received 1.1 percent of more than 3,600 who voted.
The Rock Island County GOP chair says the straw poll helped energize their base.
