The Hawkeyes opened the season with a 31-23 victory over Northern Iowa despite a great outing by Clinton's David Johnson. The UNI senior playmaker racked up 203 receiving yards and a TD for the Panthers but Iowa was able to prevail thanks to a couple 2nd half turnovers.  Johnson was just 1 of many players in the game that hail from the TV6 viewing area. Muscatine's Isaac Ales had 7 tackles for UNI and Assumption graduate Tim Kilfoy also helped patrol the running lanes as one of UNI's starting safeties.  Former Burlington & Rock Island player Derrick Willies caught a 49 yard bomb in the 4th quarter from Jake Rudock to help set up an insurance touchdown for the Hawkeyes. Also, West Branch HS alum Bo Bower plays linebacker for the Hawkeyes and came up with 1 of the defense's 2 interceptions.  VIDEO:

Illinois started off slow against Youngstown State in its season opener and even trailed the pesky Penguins 9-7 to start the 4th quarter. But new starting QB Wes Lunt of Rochester HS helped lead the Fighting' Illini on 4 touchdown drives (3 in the 4th quarter) and Illinois prevailed 28-17.

The Cyclones led North Dakota State 14-0 in the 2nd quarter before a Bison stampede turned the tables. NDSU scored 34 unanswered points to give the Bison a 34-14 easy breeze of a victory.
