Times are tight whether you're running a household or a city. While some cities are having to raise taxes to keep up with services others are ready to cut taxes. LeClaire and Bettendorf city leaders began their preliminary budget discussions with that goal.
City leaders in both towns say a big part of it is growth. Bettendorf has a lot of new commercial and residential properties on the tax base. Now the city looks to spread the burden out. "For instance, we have a new housing complex on Kimberly Road down by Duck Creek, new residential subdivisions out by Hopewell School," said City Attorney Greg Jager.
LeClaire is in the same boat. There has been a big boost from tourism with the hotel and motel tax up more than 20 percent. Plus the city's population grew by 1,000 people in the last census. "More money coming into the city in road use tax," said Mayor Bob Scannell, "the census actually put us into getting the money we actually deserve. We're putting it to good use."
But residents won't notice much difference on their bills under the proposed tax cuts. Bettendorf property owners will still end up paying more, just not to the city, thanks to the state's rollback on residential properties. LeClaire properties owners will see no change on their bills if the proposed tax cut is passed.
LeClaire right now is at $1.50 per $100 of assessed value. The plan is to bring it down by almost four cents. Bettendorf will bring it down about a penny from $1.26. Davenport property taxes will go up in July to $1.67 per 100 dollars. Moline it will go up about two cents to $1.99. If you live in Rock Island you're paying $2.40 per 100 dollars of assessed value. Mayor Pauley expects that will remain the same this year.
