A teenager from Eldridge was critically injured in a weekend off-road accident. According to the Scott County Sheriff's Office it happened in a sand pit, commonly used by ATVs and 4x4s, on private property in north-central Scott County.

The Friday night crash involved a Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by 18-year-old Eric Hermiston of Donahue. He lost control when the vehicle dropped about two feet, tipped and rolled over. The passenger, 17-year-old Justin Messer of Eldridge, was thrown from the vehicle. Messer was air-lifted to University Hospitals in Iowa City where he was listed in critical condition upon arrival.

Hermiston was not injured. He was tested and cited for an .02 alcohol violation, according to the sheriff's office. Neither Hermiston or Messer were wearing seat belts at the time.
