A former factory in Galesburg was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning and a firefighter was hurt while battling the blaze.

Around 8:30, firefighters from Galesburg and surrounding communities were called to the former Hawkinson Manufacturing/Willis Steel complex at 115 N. Cedar street -- just north of downtown Galesburg.

The three-story brick building houses at least one apartment, but it's unclear how the rest of the building was being used. The city reports that one firefighter is being treated at a local hospital for a minor injury, due to a fall.

Knox College issued a warning to students and staff to be aware of the potential for heavy smoke near the campus and to avoid the area of the fire.
