Horses and other property belonging to former Dixon Comptroller, Rita Crundwell can now be sold. Crundwell is accused of embezzling up to $53 million from her employer and spending the money on horses, jewelry and a lavish lifestyle. She is charged with federal wire fraud.
Crundwell was back in court on Friday in Rockford, where prosecutors submitted a motion to sell her horses. Prosecutors claim care for the nearly 400 horses is becoming burdensome. A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Office says Crundwell agreed to have her property sold while she awaits trial.
The office is putting out a solicitation for someone to conduct the sale on its government website, www.fedbizopps.gov. The horses and accessories will be sold separately from her four residential properties. Officials hope to have it sold within a few months.
If Crundwell is found innocent, officials say she will receive the money from the sale.
