Hundreds of area runners laced up their shoes and pounded the pavement for Bix at 6 Thursday night. It was the first training session for the big race.

Walkers or joggers taking on the entire 7-mile route of the Bix. When they turned onto Kirkwood Boulevard they were running on a brand new surface. Crews finished just hours before the Bix at six started.

The contractor was hoping to have the top layer finished days ago but setbacks with equipment changed the game plan. The goal was to resume the work Wednesday, or wait until Friday with the first Bix at 6 out of the way. However, crews said they could get the project finished up and ready just in time for runners.

"Fortunately it all worked out, the contractor was able to get on station, get that section in place. It's looking real good. My engineer tells me it just looks brand new. And I think runners are really going to enjoy the Bix route this year," said Michael Clarke.

Bix at six runs every Thursday through July 12th. This is the 38th year for the Bix-7
