U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced Friday morning that 47 transportation projects in 34 states and the District of Columbia will receive a total of almost $500 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation's TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) 2012 program.

The funding will be allocated to several different areas of transportation. More than $120 million will go to critical projects in rural areas. 35 percent of the funding will head to road and bridge projects. 12 percent will go to rail projects and another 12 percent will go to pedestrian projects.

The city of Clinton, Iowa gets to see some of that money. $2.7 million is dedicated to build Camanche Avenue on Clinton's south side. Work has already begun and when it's finished, the goal to smooth out travel in that part of town.
