Jim Petersen says his birds have personalities of their own. Jim raises Birmingham Roller Pigeons. The birds live in kit boxes at Petersen's Nine Pines Loft behind his Davenport home.
His love for pigeons started when he was a boy. He says watching these pigeons perform their aerial acrobatics is a thing of beauty. Some of his birds do a continuous roll, sometimes falling 30-40 feet. They can soar hundreds, if not thousands of feet into the air. Sometimes, they fly for more than an hour at a time.
The birds are on a strict feeding routine. In the world of roller pigeons, plump does not cut it.
Jim Petersen is a member of the National Birmingham Roller Club Hall of Fame. He has received a number of trophies for the way his birds have performed in competitions.
The pigeons depend on instinct to wing their way back home. Jim says he's had birds come home from 15-20 miles away.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Jim Petersen loves his wholly rollers.
