A trip to the pool for swimming lessons. For dozens of kids in Davenport's inner city neighborhoods, it's the first opportunity they've had to take such lessons. It's part of the summer program at Project Renewal.

The not for profit agency is a stabilizing influence for many families and their children. Project Renewal was started in 1974. The agency provides educational and recreational opportunities for less fortunate children.

Ann Schwickerath is the eyes and ears of  the organization. She has been with Project Renewal for more than 20 years. The agency gives children the opportunity to use computers to work on their spelling, reading, and math skills.  During the school year, there is an after school program where kids can get help with homework. Darnell Mosley is an "A" student. He says the help and encouragement he received at Project Renewal has taken him to a new level.

The agency also partners with the Davenport Community School District for a summer lunch program.

Sister Concetta Bendicente was a nun from Chicago who started Project Renewal 38 years ago. Her mission was to help educate, build self esteem, and affirm each child. Thousands of children have come through the doors, and Project Renewal is one of the few anchors in their lives.

Ann Schwickerath says some of those children were the first in their families to graduate from high school. Others learned the discipline needed to hold down a job. Ann says simply knowing that Project Renewal has helped to improve a child's life makes it all worthwhile.
