A western Iowa soldier has died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The wife of Army Sgt. James "Jamie" Skalberg has confirmed to the Omaha World-Herald that her husband died in combat operations this week.

The Department of Defense has not confirmed the death. Policy dictates the DoD wait at least 24 hours after the family has been notified to announce a death, according to the World Herald.

Skalberg, 25, was from Emerson, about 120 miles southwest of Des Moines.

Twenty-one Iowa soldiers have died in Afghanistan since U.S. military operations began there in October 2001. Another 50 Iowa soldiers have died in Iraq.

In total, 1,900 U.S. soldiers have died in Afghanistan since 2001: 1,577 were killed in action, 323 in non-hostile activities.
