Orange construction cones on River Drive in Davenport are causing business owners to see red. Phase one of construction on River Drive has all four lanes of traffic closed from Iowa to Oneida. The work was supposed to be done by the end of July, but the end date has just been extended by a month.
"Java Java," a local coffee shop that's usually hustling and bustling, its empty now.
"We're well under 50% of our normal sales," said owner Daron Vanzuiden. "And our Saturdays are pretty much absent."
"We're missing a lot of our regulars ... They don't want to have to funnel through traffic and we get it, but it's very disappointing."
Daron says he's already cut all the expenses he can at the shop ... and at home.
"There's no summer vacation this summer."
He and his wife are doing all the work themselves. The construction has forced the "Java Java" owner to cut store hours and jobs.
"We don't have any hours for them and I can't pay somebody to be here when I can do the work myself. We just don't have payroll."
