You could call it a little bit of Heaven on the west side of Clinton. The Bickelhaupt Arboretum is fourteen acres of rolling hills, gorgeous flowers, gardens, and the soothing sound of water.

The arboretum was a gift to the public in 1970 from Frances and Bob Bickelhaupt. The couple spent the early years doing their homework. They attended night classes at the Morton Arboretum near Chicago.  They did not have any formal training in horticulture. Frances Bickelhaupt says she had never planted a tree.

The couple learned as they went along, developing a friendship with an expert who guided their planning efforts. Frances says dedication is one of the reasons for the success of the arboretum. It's a place where people can connect with plants, trees, and nature.

Mrs. Bickelhaupt is 96 years old and still lives in the family home overlooking the grounds. She says developing the arboretum was just as important as being married, being successful in the automobile business, and raising two daughters.

There are about two thousand plants on the grounds. David Horst has worked at the arboretum for 26 years. He was in on the ground level when the Heartland Evergreen Collection took shape. 1991 was the initial planting and Horst has seen the trees grow up over the years.

The arboretum is open year round and it is free to the public.  Frances wrote a  book: A Private Couple Creates A Public Garden. The Bickelhaupt Arboretum is considered to be one of America's finest outdoor museums.
