There are few places more popular in the Quad Cities area to swim or camp than Buffalo Shores in Buffalo, IA - especially on the Fourth of July.

For the first time on this holiday however - alcohol is not permitted on the sand.

"We want to reduce the number of law enforcement incidents down here and promote a more family environment," Josh Nelson, a Scott County Conservation Officer, told KWQC.

"We felt by banning the alcohol we would do that," Nelson added.

Not all are happy with the new rules however.

"I disagree," Lisa Broer said.

"We play cornhole bags and we can't have drinks on the sand. We can't have them on the sand cause that's considered the beach so I'm somewhat against that policy," Broer added.

Campers like Broer feel they pay enough money to camp at the site and that they should be able to do more.

People can still drink alcohol on the grass as well as at camp areas.

Many families are very happy with the changes however.

"We love them. I mean we have young children and its been very difficult just because there is so much drinking I think its a great thing for families," Lisa Tart said.

Conservation officers say incidents on the beach have been down since the rule went into effect in August. Drinking on the beach is still permissible at other beaches in Buffalo that are run by the city.
