It weighs about a million pounds, was made in the Netherlands, and is like a giant puzzle. De Immigrant is an authentic Dutch windmill along the riverfront in Fulton, Illinois.

Five mile an hour winds will turn the sails on the windmill. The pieces were taken apart in Holland, put into large creights, and shipped to the United States and then on to Fulton. That was about twelve years ago. The windmill was reassembled. That took several months.

De Immigrant is a tourist attraction, especially in the summer. Thousands of people visit it each year. some from overseas.

About thirty percent of Fulton's population has Dutch heritage. They are extremely proud to have this landmark in their community.

When the wind is right, some of the volunteer millers grind wheat, rye, buckwheat and corn, using grinding stones. They need about ten to fifteen mile an hour winds in order to do the grinding. The windmill sits along a berm, not far from the Mississippi River.

Especially for people who trace their roots to Holland, De Immigrant represents a special connection to family, friends, and the Dutch heritage.
