Help For The Hennepin?

Updated:

A citizens group would like to restore some of the splendor to the historic Hennepin Canal. The canal opened to commercial traffic in 1907.

However, over time, the condition of several of the locks along the canal has deteriorated. Gary Wagle with the Friends of the Hennepin Canal says those locks are pivotal. They allow boats to rise up or go down in the canal from one elevation to another.

The Friends have a goal. They would like to raise enough money to restore three locks along the canal. One is lock twenty four in Geneseo. Restoring the three locks would open up a fifty mile stretch of the canal to boaters, fishermen, and others. That stretch would be from Geneseo to Sterling-Rock Falls.

The group says restoring that part of the canal could be a huge boost for tourism in the area. The cost to repair each of the locks could be several hundred thousand dollars.

A study is being done to determine exactly what needs to be done to the three locks. The Friends of the Hennepin Canal hopes to raise the money through donations and grants.

The canal was closed to boat travel in 1951. The State of Illinois owns the canal.
