Drivers on Illinois roadways may notice some new, impactful safety messages out their windshield morning. A new, statewide digital safety campaign aims to cut down on crashes.

Starting Monday Illinois Department of Transportation is posting daily traffic fatality counts on electronic message boards throughout the state along with reminders like "don't text and drive" and "stay off phones in work zones."

As of Monday there have been 488 traffic deaths on Illinois roadways so far in 2012. That's an increase of 70 deaths in the same timeframe last year. State troopers say there's no one reason to explain why but it's a campaign that hits close to home this week.

"Just within a ten hour period our area, the Illinois side, did have three fatalities just within a ten hour period. That's a significant increase for us, one we want to address and one we're going to continue to address," said District 7 Illinois State Trooper Jason Wilson.

Regularly the digital message boards are used for construction warnings or amber alerts and you can find them at about every major access point coming into the Quad Cities.

In Iowa, the total number of traffic deaths so far this year is 184. That's from the same time last year when there were 150.
