It is mission control for an adventure in astronomy. Pacmo. The Popular Astronomy Club Mobile Observatory.

The observatory is equipped with an eighty pound telescope. Club member Al Sheidler says it is a window to the universe. For example, Jupiter is about five hundred million miles away. The telescope, equipped with a camera, is able to capture pictures of Jupiter and other planets.

The lens on the scope is twelve inches in diameter, allowing people to view the sun which is 93 million miles from earth.  Through the telescope, people can see the sun rotate.

The portable observatory is on the road several times a year. It gives the public an opportunity to check out the wonders of the heavens. There are public viewings at night. The club meets the second Monday of each month at the planetarium  at Augustana College.

Carl Gamble started the Popular Astronomy Club in 1936. He was recognized as one of the leading amateur astronomers in the United States.
