Scott County Planning and Zoning Commission members say a fertilizer plant would not be proper use for more than 300 acres of prime farmland.
At a packed public hearing Tuesday night dozens of people got up to voice their opinions. Iowa Fertilizer Company wants to re-zone a section of land between Walcott and Davenport from agricultural preservation to heavy manufacturing.
After nearly two and a half hours the commission voted 6 to 1 to recommend denying the re-zoning. However, it's not a done deal. The county board of supervisors will have the final say in what is a very heated debate.
"Why are we putting the safety of our children on the value of a dollar?" asked area farmer David Arp.
"We hope it's going to have a big impact on property taxes and a positive impact on Davenport school district," said one resident.
"It will open up a flood gate to anyone that wants to come to Scott County to rezone our prime farmland," said Ken Arp, another farmer nearby.
Scott County Planning Director Tim Huey said the company has the option to not take the re-zoning request any further. Tuesday night he said representatives indicated a desire to continue. The earliest the public hearing in front of the county board could be is August 2nd.
The fertilizer manufacturing plant was said to be a $1.3 billion investment with 165 permanent jobs. The company is looking at several other location in Iowa to build.
