Twenty thousand plus riders. Tackling hills. Enjoying the sites and sounds off the beaten path. The annual summer spectacle in Iowa, RAGBRAI, begins on Sunday.

RAGBRAI is the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. This is the 40th year for the ride. It starts on Sunday in Western Iowa and will end in Clinton on July 28th. A distance of several hundred miles.

Several members from the River Bend Bicycle Club in Clinton will participate. Among them are  Arlyn and Mary Sue Vander Eide. This is a way for them to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. The two will ride a tandem bike. They have put in about one thousand miles of training.

John Bonte is a RAGBRAI veteran. He has a wonderful collection of tee shirts, mugs, hats, and pictures. They are reminders of small town America and good, old fashioned Midwest Hospitality. The ride passes through several small towns.

The dip site, or end of the race, will be along the Mississippi River in Clinton. That's where the cyclists will dip the front wheel of their bikes into the river. A RAGBRAI tradition.

The completion of an endurance test. A wonderful feeling of accomplishment! That's RAGBRAI.
