Davenport road construction projects continue to squeeze local businesses.
We've told you about the effect of River Drive shutting down.
But now we move to Pine Street.
It's being redone from Kimberly to West 49th street.
Pine Street has been turned into a one way street during the road project.
Although it's not completely closed, it's effectively cutting out half the traffic volume.
And even with open signs, businesses say they're making half their normal money.
"I think it's hard to get in and out, and they just go by," says Checkers manager Debbie Kiel.
That's frustrating for her. She's got a construction special going but it's no help yet. The restaurant's only bringing in half of its normal two-thousand dollars a day.
"You've got to make sure there are sales there to give the labor, and if there are not enough sales there we don't give labor, we don't have the hours to give the people."
With half the sales, her staff has been cut down to four. No layoffs yet, but employees have felt the impact.
"We transferred people to other stores so they could get some hours."
Her restaurant isn't the only business feeling the pinch. Valvoline next door put up a discount to encourage drivers to take the turn. That's helped them. But further up the street, extra signs don't mean much.
"It doesn't help, it's pretty much for neighbors," says gas station manager Jasie Saini.
The store just opened a few months ago. And now the construction is cutting off Saini's core customers.
"A lot of drive by traffic, the road is nearly closed on both sides now."
Davenport Public Works says the finished road will be much better. But with Saini relying on gas sales, it can't be finished soon enough.
"As long as we make it through, as long as we can keep our doors open."
Public works says this project will take the rest of the summer.
Once crews get this side of the road rebuilt, they'll work on the other side.
Keeping it a one way until fall.
