Some areas saw much needed rain overnight, but it's still dire fire conditions across much of the region. Nearly a third of Iowa's counties have a burn ban in effect with more expected.

What can and can't you do with a burn ban? If you're county or city has one issued you can still grill out and have a recreational fire. It has to be in a fire pit or ring, something constructed out of bricks or metal. Also, a screen on top is a good idea as well as water nearby to extinguish it. Even in the heat some campers in Scott County have fires going. Park rangers say it's important to always watch over a campfire.

"Make sure everything is attended. If it's not attended we'll tell them to watch it, put it out. There is a fine that can be issued for it but most people are very understanding about it and watchful eye on their fires," said Scott County Conservation Park Ranger Matt Poirier.

"The other night when we lit it up and there was a slight breeze you get a little leery you don't know if the sparks will fly out because the grass is so dry," said Kristy Eberhart, a concerned camper.

Fire officials have no tolerance for burning yard waste in a loose pile, using fireworks or littering cigarettes during a burn ban. In Illinois, Kewanee, Carbon Cliff and Hampton also have bans in effect until further notice.
