Iowa's unemployment rate ticked up, slightly in June to 5.2 percent. That compares to 5.1 percent in May, but still well below the 6 percent jobless rate in June of 2011.

State officials say that's pretty good considering the typical loss of jobs linked to education and summer break. The Iowa Workforce Development Center says the creation of 3,100 private sector jobs offset the seasonal losses.

The agency reports that the number of unemployed Iowans rose slightly to 85,600 in June from 85,000 in May. A year ago there were 100,300 unemployed. There were a total of 1,573,400 people working in June, 2012.

So who was hiring? Manufacturing posted a gain of 1,500 jobs in durable goods. Other job gains were reflected in wholesale trade (1,100), leisure and hospitality (1,000) and financial activities (600). Construction lost the most jobs in the private sector, down 2,300. The sector lost momentum over the past couple of months. Retail trade dropped by 1,600 in June, and education and health services declined by 700.
