Kid Engineers Design Moon Rovers

Updated:

Some assembly required. Take a pop bottle, a straw, a balloon  and pop bottle tops. What you have is a kid's version of the land rover. The rover is intended to handle the moon's rugged terrain.

It's the Design Squad Challenge at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. Kids are challenged to engineer their own rover made out of everyday items.

They release air from a balloon, and that air actually propels the land rover. It's all about the rover going faster or further.

Molli Hermiston is the instructor. She says sometimes the best things come out of making a mistake. The children get to test their rovers, and if they do not work the first time, go back and make changes. Kids are learning about the engineering process. Going through the steps that astronauts and engineers use in figuring out the problem.

The Design Squad Challenge is one of the many activities at the NASA Art Project. Celebrating the Space Agency's 50th anniversary. That exhibit is at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport until October 7th.
