A new perspective on an officer-involved shooting in Rock Island over the weekend. The Rock Island Integrity Task Force Monday released a minute and a half of the emergency radio traffic from during the incident.
Investigators continued talks with witnesses Monday in the area of 11th Street and 18 1/2 Avenue. Because this case involved a foot pursuit through this neighborhood investigators say they do not have dash cam video to go by, but they have been going through the emergency radio traffic from the moments leading up to, and the time after the shooting.
Officials say it started with two officers serving a search warrant when the suspect allegedly took off on foot. Officer: "He's running southbound toward 11th Street." Dispatcher: "clear the air."
You hear an officer reference a weapon. Officer: "he's got a gun, he's got a gun."
Then an area known for heavy traffic starts to get swarmed by squad cars. Another officer: "205. where are they at? What's the location?"
Dispatcher: "11th Street and what avenue 201?"
Officials say the resident was waving a handgun at police. That's when one officer reportedly fired his weapon, wounding the man in the groin. Officer: "Shots fired, shots fired. Get some people down here."
You don't hear the gun go off on the radio but can pick up people screaming in the background. Officer: "Man down. 11 and 18 and half. We need an ambulance."
The Rock Island County Integrity Task Force continues their investigation and is still looking for information from anyone who witnessed the incident. "Still trying to canvas the area, talk to everyone that could have seen the foot pursuit or seen the shooting," said Master Sgt. Chris Endress.
Meanwhile, people nearby say they're still shaken by all the commotion so close to home. "You never know where bullets are going to be," said one neighbor.
The man is in the hospital in Peoria with what police say are non-life threatening injuries. One officer is on leave right now. Investigators are not releasing their names at this time.
