Two fires Tuesday morning just minutes apart kept Rock Island firefighters busy.

The first call came in at 2:47 a.m. for a fire at Tri City Heat Treat. The family owned business is located in the 2000 block of 5th Street in Rock Island. The second call came in just two minutes later for a deck fire at a house in the 1600 block of 30th Street.

When firefighters got to Tri City Heat Treat there was heavy smoke coming from the roof.  It turns out insulation in the roof was on fire. The sprinkler system had most of the fire out before crews arrived. Firefighters used dry chemical extinguishers to put the rest of the fire out. According to the Rock Island Fire Department, dry chemical extinguishers had to be used because water might have caused the heat treat furnaces to explode.

While crews were fighting that fire, other firefighters were working on the deck fire. The person who lives at the home first tried to put the flames out with a garden hose. Firefighters were able to quickly stop the fire before it spread to the house. The home is located just three doors down from Rock Island Fire Station Three. The man told investigators his dog alerted him to the fire by waking him up.

No one was hurt in either incident. Investigators say the fire at Tri City Heat Treat was caused by a malfunctioning heat treat furnace. Damages are estimated at $10,000. They say embers from a charcoal grill started the deck fire. Damages there are estimated at $5,000.

The Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department helped with the fire at the business. The Moline Fire Department assisted with the deck fire.
