The Iowa Utilities Board is asking you to conserve water. A number of factors have led to an increased demand right now. There are drought conditions across the state, high temperatures and historic low water levels in Iowa lakes, rivers and streams for this time of the year.

The IUB encourages people to be proactive and conserve water whenever possible. With dry weather conditions expected to continue, using simple water conservation tips can reduce your monthly water bills and serve the public interest.

The IUB also recommends customers consider the following water conservation solutions:

  • Check lawn irrigation systems regularly to ensure they work properly and do not leak.
  • Avoid watering during the heat of the day. It is most efficient to water plants and lawns in the morning or evening.
  • Water your lawn less often. Less frequent soakings help turf roots grow deeper.
  • Water only gardens and lawns, NOT streets and sidewalks.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your sidewalk, driveway, garage, or patio.
  • Mitigate water hose leaks by ensuring a tight connection to the spigot, replacing the nylon or rubber hose washer, or getting a new hose, if necessary.
  • When possible, use water from the air conditioning condenser, dehumidifier, bath, or sink on plants or in the garden.
  • Use a bucket and sponge, instead of a hose to wash vehicles, bikes, or other items.
  • Run dishwashers and clothes washers only with full loads, using the water-saver cycle.
  • Check for leaky toilets, faucets, or showerheads. Fix any leaks. If replacement is necessary, seek a WaterSense-labeled model.
  • Turn off water while brushing teeth or washing dishes in the sink.
  • Keep water in the refrigerator rather than running water until gets cold.
  • Wash produce in a basin rather than under a running faucet.
