Blue Marlins Make A Splash

Updated:

Discipline. Hard work. Dedication. That's what instructors preach to the young athletes involved in the Moline Blue Marlins. It's a swimming club for kids ranging in age from six to eighteen.

The swimmers practice year round. They compete locally and at regional meets.

One of the coaches is Brett Busch. He says repetition is a big deal in swimming. Technique, he says, comes first. Speed follows as the swimmers get bigger and stronger.

There are about fifty young swimmers in the club. Many say they will be watching the Summer Olympic Games. Austin Morris will pay special attention to the butterfly events, looking to see how hard the swimmers kick. Focusing on their momentum and the stamina they have in each race.

Evan Juarez is a Blue Marlin who competes in the breast stroke. His Olympic favorite is Brendan Hansen.

The Blue Marlins have been in existence since the 1970's. The club is a feeder system for the Moline High School Swim Team.
