Flying Floyd's Remarkable Track Career

Updated:

The numbers speak for themselves. In his fifty eight year track career, Bud Smith from Clinton competed in 339 meets, winning the high jump 214 times. One of his most memorable victories came in the 1957 Kansas Relays when he defeated Jayhawk track star and future pro basketball great Wilt Chamberlain.

Smith says his goal on that day was to high jump six feet nine inches. Smith did just that, beating Chamberlain by three inches.

They called him Flying Floyd Smith, the barefoot boy. The kid who attended Mount Carroll High School. His family could not afford to buy him a pair of track shoes, so he competed barefoot.

Bud's illustrious track career allowed him to rub elbows with some of the sport's greatest names. Bob Richards, Rafer Johnson, and Jesse Owens to name a few.  He traveled to compete in Master's events and became friends with athletes from several foreign countries.

Bud Smith's best high jump was six eleven and a quarter. His basement is like a museum, filled with numerous awards he has received over the years.  He even has a mini track painted on his basement floor.

Bud plans to watch the Olympic High Jumpers competing at the London Summer Games. He predicts the winning high jump could be seven feet, ten inches. Smith  likes all the track events, saying it gets so competitive.
