Thousand of jazz fans are in Davenport this weekend for the annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival. Bix was born in Davenport and was one of the superb jazz musicians of the 1920's. He played the cornet and piano.

Gerri Bowers has done a tremendous amount of research on Bix's life. She says Beiderbecke was born to play the horn. He did not graduate from high school but was a musician from the time he was three years old. His mother was a pianist at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport.

Jim Petersen's grandmother and Bix's mom were first cousins. Jim says Beiderbecke was featured on about 200 recordings. Bix wrote five pieces of music and played with the Paul Whiteman band.

Petersen says Bix had a unique style and his interpretation of the music was superb. He captured peoples imaginations with his music.

Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke was only 28 years old when he died in 1931. He is buried in Davenport. He was a self taught cornet player.

The 41st Annual Jazz Festival runs through Sunday, with venues at the River Center, the Adler, and LeClaire Park Bandshell.
