UPDATE: Hope has turned to disappointment, as the lead investigators have been following does not pan out. After three days of physically and mentally exhausting work, crews admit defeat. They say there is nothing on the island in the Rock River that will lead them to Trudy Appleby. Her family says these few days have been a roller coaster of emotion. They are holding onto hope, but tell TV6 they want closure.
State Police Crime Scene Investigators returned to the Rock River near Colona, Illinois around 6:30 Friday morning to follow up on a new lead in the Trudy Appleby case. They won't say what the new lead is, but they're searching an island just off the Highway 84 bridge. They were also out there on Thursday.
In 1996, then 11-year-old Appleby disappeared just weeks before her 1212th birthday. She was last seen in Moline getting into a silver or gray vehicle with an unknown male in his twenties with brown curly hair.
The Moline Police Department announced on Thursday morning that they had uncovered a new lead in the missing persons case. They say this lead, like the hundreds of others the Moline Police Department has investigated regarding Appleby's disappearance, will have detectives making all efforts to follow the new information as far as it takes them.
Moline officers are working with the Henry County and Rock Island County Sheriff's Departments, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Illinois State Police.
Police ask anyone with information about Trudy's disappearance or specifically about the individual or individuals responsible for Trudy's disappearance call the Moline Police Department 309-797-0401. If you wish to remain anonymous and collect a reward you may also call Crime Stoppers of the Quad Cities 309-762-9500.
