They are gold medal winners. Olympic champs. Special Olympians from the Quad Cities who brought home the gold.

Jason Halkias and Kevin Schmieder are weight lifters. The two shine in both the bench press and the deadlift. At the Special Olympics in Iowa City earlier this year, Kevin dead lifted 185 pounds in his division.

Jason has also struck gold in weightlifting. He believes the sport makes him stronger both physically and mentally.

Jason is 25 years old. Kevin is 34. Marie Randol is their coach and says weightlifting requires quite a bit of mental preparation. She says both athletes have great work ethic, and the hours spent in the gym translate into success during a competition.

Jason says it's important to start slowly and build your way up. At a recent practice, he was able to dead lift 115 pounds.

Their gold medals are emblazoned with the words: Skill, Courage, Sharing, and Joy. Their success is proof that special needs athletes can compete and succeed when given the opportunity.
