It is one of the world's most popular hobbies. Genealogy. The Davenport Family History Center is celebrating its 30th anniversary with an open house on Saturday.

The center is sponsored by the Mormon Church, and has helped thousands of people trace their roots.

Lori Longenecker's mother is German. Her dad traces his roots to Syria. She recently discovered through research at the center that the German side of her family has a connection to royalty in Denmark.  Lori says that genealogy is like trying to find the pieces to a giant family puzzle.

The center has dozens of reference books, new computers, microfilm, and other tools to help people do research.  John Leonard found out that his great, great grandfather was in the Civil War.

The Family History Center is staffed by volunteers. The open house is August 11th.  It is from 10am -4pm. The center is located at 4929 Wisconsin Avenue in Davenport.
