Years ago, they dotted the Iowa landscape. There were thousands of one room country schools in the Hawkeye State.

Butler #2 is a gem, still standing, not far from Scott County Park. It is a doorway to discovery. The school was built in the 1870's. Some of the desks, the piano, and other items are originals.

In the 1950's, Larry Dannatt attended kindergarten through eighth grade at the school. The building did not have running water, so his job was to bring water in from the outside and fill the water jug for students.

Larry also sat next to Caroln Arp. Little did they know back then that someday they would become husband and wife.  Carolyn attended classes for two years at Butler #2.

The building did not have a restroom so students used an outhouse up on a nearby hill.

Joan Erps was the last teacher at the school. She taught third grade there for a year. There were almost thirty students in her class.

The classroom photos, flash cards, books for basic readers, and other items on display are a throwback to the days when the one room country school was really a way of life for many children in rural Iowa.
