Safety is a concern in Bettendorf, where students will be heading back to class with sidewalk construction along Devil's Glen Road. The city has been building a new, expanded walkway from the bridge at Duck Creek to Middle Road. The project is almost complete, but Bettendorf Public Works Director Brian Schmidt says the work won't be finished when children head back to school at Riverdale Heights Elementary School on Wednesday. He says the contractor will clean up some of the construction debris around the school, but one lane of traffic will remain closed and the sidewalk will not be open.

School Principal Jennifer Gertson says they will have staff posted outside to help as students arrive.

"The sidewalk and bike path are there to enhance, you know, helping kids get to school, so we're just kinda hoping parents will know that there's construction that's been ongoing and that it is wrapping up and so that we take extra care and precaution with students to get them here safely tomorrow," Gertson said.

The new sidewalks are 10 feet wide and will eventually connect two recreational trails.
