It's one of many old buildings in our area to face a battle over its fate. But for the former Lincoln School building in Rock Island, it's demolition starting Thursday.

The city bought the 118 year old building in 2007. Now vacant for 30 years and not well-maintained, council this summer decided on demolition. "it would be way too costly to renovate," said Jeff Eder, Community & Economic Development Director for Rock Island.

Still, some groups fought to save it hoping it could be a museum or a community center. There's a facebook page dedicated to the building with old pictures and post cards. George Barajas posted that he didn't want to see it an empty lot but that looks to be what's next for the property.

"We have not discussed what the use of the property is going to be. In all likelihood we'll go through a neighborhood planning process," added Eder. At this point the city doesn't have a plan. Long-term possibilities are making it a park or building something in it's place. The hope is to have something residential or commercial to put the property back on the tax roll.

"We'll also see what the economy does to see what the economy will support. I would expect that to take some time though."

He says housing may be the best use since the surrounding area is mostly residential. It's something a steering committee will look at as part of the central city plan and improvements to that entire neighborhood. "I'm sure the public will be involved in the process as we go forward to determine what is the best use," added Eder.

Demolition is costing the city more than $440,000. Crews start on the Thursday and on Monday are scheduled begin work on the school itself.
